Should parents of young children worry about fluorisis?
We live in a large Canadian city and I believe our drinking water is fluorated. Could our small children suffer teeth damage? What can we do about it?

The fact is....that in 15 years of practice in Calgary and Alberta...I have seen 3 cases of fluorosis. And in those cases, the people grew up on farms will well water with high concentrations of fluoride.
I believe the fact is that there was a much higher incidence of fluorosis when people were using those fluoride pills and or drops. If the parents mistakingly gave the kids too much, or if the kids accidently got into the pills or drops and swallowed too much of it, this was a problem.
When you are brushing your children's teeth, make sure to use a very small amount of toothpaste (yes...fluoridated toothpaste). Encourage them to spit it out at the sink....at first they won't, they will swallow it. But that is why you use a very small amount. Eventually they will learn to spit it out for real.
And I don't agree with some people and physicians I have heard say that the city is medicating the people. It isn't like they are putting birth control, anti-depressants or anti-psychotics (although perhaps these drugs in the drinking water might be a good idea!) in the water. Fluoride naturally occus in our drinking water. All the city does is raise the concentration to a level that has been found to be beneficial in the fight of tooth decay.
For me as a dentist...the benefit of fluoridated city water FAR outweighs the potential risk of fluorosis....it just doesn't happen. Tooth decay happens a lot with the foods and habits of today. Sippy cups with juice that the kids walk around with all day, milk in bottles at bedtime, parents too lazy or unable to brush their children's teeth after meals and snacks...all result in tooth decay. Having fluoride ions in our body systemically means that when the teeth undergo the demineralization/remineralization process, there will be fluoride ions around within the saliva to be incorporated back into the teeth and to potentially make them a little bit stronger.
