parenting education curriculum
Parents are responsible for sexual education, but that is not working.....?
for everyone obviously. So what is the next step? The consensus is that parents are responsible, not schools or the government. I wholeheartedly agree with that, but how do we reach those kids that get no sexual education from their parents if not through the schools. It falls to them being socially shunned or hated because of bad decisions THEY made based on the incorrect or absent education they received from parents, the internet or shoddy school curriculum. This is a HUGE problem, but what can we do to help solve it? Any ideas?
I have fairly liberal views on sex education, I believe that children are never too young to learn.
My daughter is 8, she knows exactly what happens in the mechanics of sex - she prefers to call is humpalumpa's - and can give a very detailed explanation if asked.
We breed dogs and virtually all her life she has watched the 'circle of life'. She understands when a female is in 'season' and when she is ready to mate. She has seen the 'action' take place and assisted when necessary. She has also helped in the whelping of puppies, including removing the sacs from the mouths and resusitation.
You are all probably saying 'dogs aren't human and it isn't the same' but if you listened to my daughter evaluating and comparing the two you would realise just how similar it all is.
Emotions make all the difference, and I beleive that she has all the facts at her disposal so that when her emotions come into play she will be better equiped to make an informed decsion.
She also knows about illness, deformity and death. While they are not everyday happenings she does understand how and why they happen and the consequences. In this instance I am talking about circumstances that have happened within our immediate family.
The fact that children have very little or limited access to animals is detremential to their overall development. We can learn so much from watching animals living their normal lives without having to 'learn' anything at all. Observation makes learning fun.
