How to deal with pain during pregnancy time

Labour begins to take place when your uterus starts contracting to help push the baby out and allow the delivery to happen. Just before you start experiencing labour, your uterus will tighten and cause some discomfort rather than pain. You will know that labour has started only when these contractions become regular and prolonged. Also during labour, the mouth of your cervix will be opening up wide to make sure that the baby can pass through easily during delivery. While you are pregnant, you will notice several changes that prepare you for these days. For instance you will notice the loosening of your pelvic ligaments as well. The first labours however can be drastically painful. How much pain a woman can take is completely left to her alone and sometimes while women can bear the pain many others cannot. So there are a number of methods in which pain relief in labour can be dealt with during pregnancy.

TENS
This procedure is effective in early labour to help relieve the woman of labour pain. In this method, pads are put to your lower back and light electricity currents are passed through to help your body release pain relieving substances. It will not be before at least 30 minutes, that the effects of the procedure will be felt. It is very useful and there are no known side effects of TENS.

GAS (ENTONOX) –
Entonox is a kind of gas that has a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide commonly referred to as laughing gas. This helps to reduce pain without inducing sleepiness in the pain bearer. The gas takes about 30 to 45 seconds to react. This does not have any ill effects on the baby. In fact the extra doze of oxygen helps to make the baby feel better aired. Some mothers may feel slightly light in the head while using entonox. Your mouth might also feel dry for which you need to keep water and ice handy. Over breathing might also cause a sensation of tingling in your fingers. Entonox is effective only when you breathe it in and quite naturally the effect fades out the moment you stop inhaling it. This will reduce pain but not remove it.

Pain killing injections
Injections to relieve pain are used only on your request. The pain killing drug is injected into a muscle either in your buttock or your thigh and if the drug is introduced in the blood stream directly for a faster reaction. This method is more commonly provided for post operative pain but if your labour pain is unbearable, then these can be used as well. When you press a button, a certain controlled dosage of drug is released to your blood stream and this can be done as long as you do not feel free from pain and are comfortable. Your body weight is an important factor to decide the dosage of the pain relieving drug. You might feel nauseated, drowsy and the need to vomit after using this drug. Also an over dose might cause your breathing to slow down.

Epidural analgesia –
The nerves from your uterus are connected to the brain via your lower back. If you are experiencing too much of labour pain and it feel unbearable, it is possible to soak these nerves in anesthetic fluid with the help of an injection. A tube is inserted via which the anesthesia will be passed. Once this tube is placed correctly you will not even be aware of its presence. In a standard epidural, a strong local anesthesia is used. Your legs will tend to feel heavier after this. In a mobile epidural, a needle is inserted instead of a tube and the drug is injected through that.
