Why are people more outrages by stories of pedophiles than news about parents putting their kids in coma?

This has always astound me on news webboard from all over the world in every languages and cultures. When there's a story about a pedophile getting caught, even the ones who'd not actually committed the crime yet--and the child in question is perfectly OK, people still react very furiously, spitting out the most furious vocabularies in their languages, going into graphic details about what they would physically wanted to do to that person for punishment. But when you have news about parents who beat up their own kids and putting them into coma, you don't seem to get as much reactions. This is very evident especially on YouTube. Why is that? Is it because it is more OK because it is done by the parents? or is it because it doesn't involve sexual acts? This doesn't seem logical does it?

I'll approach this from two different angles:
Sexual abuse is considered by many people to be worse that physical abuse. It is unbelievably damaging to a developing mind, and the overall lay-person population is relatively aware of this. Further, the Judeo-Christian dominated western world seems to be somewhat repressed sexually and finds sexually based crimes to be especially heinous (you ever hear the opening to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit?).

But I think another interesting thing is that, for instance in the United States and other nations, it is perfectly legal to strike and inflict pain intentionally on children. Spanking is so deeply ingrained in the collective psyche that severe beating of children to the point of injury is almost like, "well, they took a legal activity a little too far." It never occurs to people that there are mountains of evidence that spanking children is also psychologically damaging. For one, it makes you grow up to think that it's OK to do it, and that proposing doing horrible, vicious to a pedophile somehow is an admirable trait.

I'm not defending pedophiles at all, but parents who beat the hell out of defenseless children are just as low.
