How do I go about getting this child help?

My oldest daughter, 13, came to me and told me she thinks her best friend is depressed. I also found out that her friend will snap herself with rubber bands to hurt herself. I'm honestly not sure where to take it from here. Do I call the parents? Talk to the child herself? Or do I make the report through school? If it was me, I'd want to get the call directly from the parent without having the school in personal bussiness, but other people feel differently. What do you think?

That's very sad, and I think that it's really good that your teenager is helping out with this!

I wouldn't really call the parents, because they COULD be a factor of why she's depressed.
I wouldn't talk to the child herself because that could be kinda embarrassing, especially since you're her friend's mom. If I were you, I'd have a school counselor to talk to her. I know it may feel a little weird at first, but I'm sure the counselor will find a way to make her feel comfortable. It's better than nothing. You should get that child some help before it gets worse!

Good Luck!
